How Do Sit To Stand Lifts Work?
Sit To Stand Lifts help those who aren’t able to fully stand-up on their own from a sitting position. They work by supporting your loved one as they shift their weight and rise, making standing easy and safe.
How it works: To begin, your loved one places their feet on a steady platform, and holds tightly onto the ergonomic handgrips. They lean their knees against the padded knee rest, which gives them additional support and prevents them from sliding. The unit is locked into place to stop it from rolling.
Once your loved one is secured and ready to stand, the caregiver uses a lever to gently raise them to a standing posture. When they’re standing, they can be easily rolled to a bed, wheelchair, toilet, or anywhere else. The pivoting seat also gives them the option to sit in a near-standing position.
Sit to Stand Lifts encourage your loved one to participate and engage their muscles when they stand, helping them maintain their strength and mobility.

The Sara Stedy by Arjo lets a single caregiver help your loved one to stand, safely and effortlessly.
Available in two sizes, the Sara Stedy is perfect for helping transfer them to a wheelchair, bed, or toilet.
The Sara Stedy has ergonomic handles, knee support pads, and a sturdy footplate to give the right amount of stability. Lightweight but durable, this model is a great choice to help someone who needs some help standing. They can be used at home or in hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers.

Sit To Stand Lift vs. Hoyer Lift
Before you choose, know the difference between a Hoyer Lift and a Sit to Stand Lift, and which one is the better fit for your loved one.
Sit To Stand Lift:
- Best for Moderate Assistance: Sit to Stand Lifts, like the Sara Stedy, are best for users who can bear some weight and have some mobility, but need some help to stand. They let users actively participate in standing and transfers, which can help them keep up their strength and mobility over time.
- Compact and User-Friendly: Sit to Stand lifts are light, easy to move, and easy to store. Great for use at home.
- Focused on Short Transfers: Sit to Stand Lifts are best for shorter transfers to a wheelchair, bed, or toilet.
Hoyer Lift:
- Designed for Full Support: Hoyer Lifts are needed for users with very little or no mobility. They bear all of the weight and fully support the body during transfers.
- Versatile Applications: These lifts can be used for bed-to-chair transfers, repositioning, and even lifting individuals from the floor.
- More Bulk, Less Active Participation: Hoyer Lifts are larger, heavier, and do all of the work, not allowing the user to participate.
If you’re deciding between these lifts, it’s important to know your loved one’s mobility level, the caregiver’s needs, and the place where it’s going to be used. For a user who only needs moderate help in standing, the Sit To Stand Lift is more engaging and easy-to-use.
